How to Create An Attractive and Unique Moodboard

As the first step of the design, the mood board shows the designer’s planning and thinking process through the combination of different pictures. Moodboard is the most commonly used visual research tool for foreign designers. After the designer has a full understanding of a brand, product, or even a poster theme, he collects relevant visual elements such as colors, images, fonts, or other materials. He finally forms a reference for the design direction and form.

Right now, for someone just entering the fashion industry, the hardest thing to do would be to build a mood board that reflects their collections. That is, how to make an attractive collage. Let the reader remember your theme at first sight and make a deep impression. Collage, combined with costume design, is the most commonly used technique in works collection. Whether it is text, incomplete pictures, mass production of advertising prints, newspapers, and magazines in black and white or color photos, scrapbooks can be a good collection of materials. The collage technique is very diversified, with vibrant, expressive force and visual language, which can not only change in the color, texture, and texture of the creation, in which the designer’s personality and interest, non-realistic recombination and narrative technique, can have a variety of different interpretation. Collage is actually to select the elements from the “fragmented” materials that best fit your art theme and then combine, recombine and superimpose these elements to make it narrative, more like telling or describing a story. Collage is not a simple collage, and it also needs to create logic.

What is the inspiration board?

In addition to drawing inspiration from fashion trends, designers can also draw inspiration from anything in life, such as movies, books, flowers, and trees. As a result, designers often need a resource to help them sort out their sources of Inspiration before embarking on a new fashion project: the Inspiration Board.

What is the moldboard?

The Mood board is a heuristic and exploratory way to study photography style, color palettes, typography, pattern, and overall look and feel. Visual design is closely related to people’s emotions, and different models will always cause mixed feelings.

  1. Help designers to open their imagination, designers can organize their thoughts in their mood board, and find new design inspiration;
  2. Help the team to cooperate, and the team members can directly communicate the style direction of the project through the mood board;
  3. Show the style direction to the client, so that the client can instantly see the designer’s thinking and future design direction;

Step1. Collect: collect a large number of vision related to the project, such as LOGO, font, color, overall visual style, etc.

First, Experience Keywords need to be defined. In a design project, through stakeholder interviews and user research, the designer creates personas for the product. Based on personas, combining user research results and brand/marketing documents, Experience Keywords can be generated. When personas and experience keywords are identified, use mood boards to explore the visual style of the site or product and to serve as a basis for early communication with insiders.

Step 2. Presentation: there are no strict requirements on the presentation form of MoodBoard. You can create a separate AI drawing board and put them in it, or use collage, or even print them out and pin them to a cork board.

Second, it’s the easiest way to create a mood board. With this pattern, you don’t have to worry about details like fonts and specific colors. Find inspirational material, which may include screenshots of sites that convey similar styles and moods. It’s fast, it’s fun, but it has a certain amount of ambiguity. In this form of a mood board, color matching, font handling (such as titles and subheadings), button style, and even picture style are defined. Standard templates allow people to focus on the characteristic elements. Generally speaking, the mood board can be presented in a physical way, but also in a digital form. Considering the cost, time, and other factors, we choose the digital way more, because this way provides more flexible and diverse choices for designers.

Step 3. Screening: visual creativity can be directly seen on MoodBoard, and it can be quickly judged whether the vision conforms to the overall tonality. At this point, the available visual style, element style has been basically surfaced, we can pick them out;

Step 4. Induction: sort the selected visual images by theme, category or style to get a clear style direction document;

A simple MoodBoard can already direct the brand landing. A good MoodBoard can also give us a lot of imagination. When we put together disparate visions, it’s easy to bump into new possibilities. When you’re building a brand MoodBoard, it tends to be much, much bigger than the picture above, and the inspiration keeps coming.
